“I’d like to see more images of older women who are themselves, who feel comfortable and out-going. I’ll only give up when I can’t walk!”

Look at Me! Images of Women & Ageing

Look at Me! Images of Women & Ageing is the title of an academic and arts research project that aims to transform the way society views older women. The principle investigator is Professor Lorna Warren, Lecturer in Social Policy in the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield.

As project partner, Eventus managed the delivery of two community-based photographic projects and contributed to the research by providing an opportunity to consider the importance of neighbourhood to women’s views of ageing.

Professional photographers Laura Pannack and Monica Fernandez were commissioned by Eventus to work with two groups of women; 11 women who volunteer for Green Estate, an environmental social enterprise based at the Manor and Castle area of Sheffield and a group of 13 older women resident at Guildford Grange Extra Care Scheme in Norfolk Park, managed by Places for People.

The photographers encouraged participants to try out creative techniques to capture what ageing means to them and documented the process with photographic portraits of the women involved. The outcomes were shared with the local community through exhibitions at Guildford Grange and the Dovercourt Road GP Surgery in S2.

The images and interviews with project participants from Green Estate and Guildford Grange will feed into the academic research and a larger exhibition of work produced by all the project partners will be exhibited in public venues in and around Sheffield in March 2011, to mark the centenary of International Women’s Day.
