Eventus was commissioned by SPELL (Supporting People into Employment and Lifelong Learning) to produce Creative Futures, a Cultural Action Plan for Southey and Owlerton. This mapped existing activity across a range of cultural and community organisations and linked future development firmly into major regeneration themes. Along with recommending suggested delivery mechanisms and a strategic overall funding framework, Eventus also provided evaluation models for participation in the arts and support for the on-going development of a cultural strategy.
Due to the success of the original commision, Eventus obtained funding from Arts Council England and SRB5 to review the Cultural Action Plan and to appoint a Co-ordinator to provide a clear vision and action plan to take the area forward. The key aims of the Cultural Strategy are to facilitate the strategic use of cultural resources for the integrated regeneration of the area and to explore the potential of culture and creativity as an economic driver for neighbourhood regeneration. Along with these specific aims, it is essential that high quality design is an integral part of the local transformation of the built and green environment.
Sheffield City Council was designated as one of only 12 LGA / DCMS Cultural Pathfinders - and the only one in Yorkshire - based on the work in the Southey Owlerton Area Regeneration (SOAR) area. Cultural Pathfinders are showing how culture and sport can help deliver Government priorities across public life. A national evaluation framework will monitor the impact of culture on the 7 Shared Priorities: creating safer and stronger communities; promoting healthier communities; improving the quality of life of children and young people, families at risk and older people; raising standards across schools; transforming the local environment; meeting transport needs more effectively; promoting the economic vitality of localities.
